This is a retrospective exhibition of Fong Chung-Ray. The homonymous title of the exhibition, Abstract Evolutions, refers to a desire to undergo spiritual or “classical” cultivation in order to transcend the constraints imposed by “form”; to ultimately reach a sublime state beyond materiality. This title reflects Fong’s philosophical thoughts and spiritual pursuits within his creative practice. It is the ultimate expression of his artistic explorations.

The style and expression of Fong’s artworks have gradually evolved over the past seventy years, reflecting both the dimensionality and depth of his creative process, as well as the diversity of contemporary art.

Various entwined creative qualities include: 1) the unbound brushstrokes of Traces of the Brush, 2) an Evolution of Chinese Art which sees a melding of thought and form, 3) the coexistence of Chinese and Western artistic traditions and techniques in the Eastern and Western Confluence, as well as 4) the pursuit of a spiritual dimension through Abstract Evolutions. These qualities do not exist in isolation and are not exclusive to each other. Instead, they delicately interact and co-exist, reflecting Fong’s profound tenacity and understanding of artistic creation.
